Protection
This page aims to provide information about protection coordination in humanitarian operations at the global and country levels in order to assist protection actors on the ground to ensure a more effective and predictable response to protection.
Protection covers a wide range of activities that are aimed at ensuring respect for the rights of all individuals, regardless of their age, gender or social, ethnic, national, religious or other background. This requires a collaborative and coordinated response by various national and international actors with diverse mandates, expertise and experience.
In Sri Lanka, the IDP Protection Working Group was established by UNHCR in 2006 to serve as an Inter-Agency forum to bring actors together to discuss protection issues related to conflict IDPs and returnees at a national level. The Working Group aims to strengthen collaboration between agencies, identify needs and gaps, and advise the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL), the IASC and UN Country Team on protection issues. The
IDP Protection Working Group has strong links with the IDP protection fora in the Districts and reports on a regular basis to the IASC. The IDP Protection Working Group’s membership consists of both UN and non-UN actors.
